Healthspan determines wealthspan
Studies put the additional life expectancy of wealthy people at 3 to 15 years. Exercise, nutrition, sleep, mental strength and social activity extend the healthy years of your life, known as your healthspan. Scientists estimate that only around 20 per cent of how we age is determined by our genes. The rest is down to how we live.
The Blue Zones: lessons from the long-lived
Together with a team of experts, the American Dan Buettner studied five regions with exceptionally high life expectancy: Okinawa (Japan), Sardinia (Italy), Ikaria (Greece), Nicoya (Costa Rica) and Loma Linda (California). What they have in common can be applied to our own culture:
- Living in tune with your region and with nature
- A purpose in life (“ikigai”): I am here for a reason, I am needed
- Good family and friends: emotional security and a sense of being cared for
- Healthy sleep and listening to your body
- The 80 per cent rule: no excess in eating, exercise or work
- Natural movement in everyday life
- Moderate, mainly plant-based, regional food, eaten with enjoyment
- Not excessive wealth, but security
The main factor in longevity is low chronic stress. Find the balance between living today and living later. Do not keep putting off enjoyment: live today and tomorrow.
Why health belongs in financial advice
Money has a great influence on health, and health has a great influence on Financial Wellbeing. Money worries weigh on sleep, mental health and relationships. Illness affects income, spending and how much wealth you need in later life. Health is the new wealth: if you live well, you live longer. If you plan wisely, you live with greater peace of mind.
